Not all cosplayer that cosplay some role is suitable to the character they played, though they can act as the character, and the detail of the costumes is count but more important things is “does it match?”.

41th Story: COSPLAY

“Cosplay (コスプレ, kosupure - pronounced coz-play) is Japanese term short for "costume and roleplay."

Cosplay adalah suatu hobi untuk berdandan dan berperan menjadi serupa karakter anime, manga, permainan video, jrock, jpop. Tapi beberapa lingkaran telah mengembangkan arti cosplay untuk permainan kostum apapun. Pembuatan istilah cosplay biasa diberikan kepada Nov Takahashi dari Studio Hard saat dia mengunjungi pergelaran sci-fi WorldCon di Los Angeles tahun 1984. Seseorang yang melakukan cosplay disebut cosplayer. Cosplay sendiri lahir di dalam WorldCon. Tahun 1939 pada acara WorldCon pertama, Forrest J. Ackerman memakai baju yang ia namakan "futuristicostume" yang didesign dan dibuat oleh Myrtle R. Douglas. Itu memicu permainan kostum sebagai bagian integral dari Worldcon. Nov Takahashi melihatnya hampir 50 tahun kemudian dan membawanya pulang ke Jepang, dia begitu terkesan oleh kostum dan latar yang dibuat oleh para pengunjung lain sampai dia terus membicarakan dan melaporkannya saat kembali ke Jepang.Para penggemar cosplay termasuk cosplayer maupun bukan cosplayer sudah tersebar di seluruh penjuru dunia, yaitu Amerika, Tiongkok, Eropa, Filipina, maupun Indonesia sendiri. Di Internet komunitas Cosplay dapat ditemui di berbagai situs dengan topik meluas seperti Cosplay.com yang membahas Cosplay secara garis besar, maupun situs bertopik spesifik seperti AnimeTwin.com sebagai ajang "nilai dan pamer foto" para Cosplayer di seluruh dunia.

Cosplay marak di kota-kota besar di Indonesia sejak tahun tahun 1990-an dan memuncak tahun 2003-2005. Menurut catatan Ketua Jurusan Manajemen Komunikasi Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung, Antar Venus, komunitas cosplay masih terus ada. Di Bandung saja ada 10 komunitas. Di Jabodetabek ada sekitar 30 komunitas. Komunitas yang sama juga tumbuh di Medan, Surabaya, dan kota lain. Cosplay biasanya diadakan di acara-acara yang berbau japan culture atau acara-acara anime exhibition.
